Not just a parallel website

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

For many educational institutions, having their own websites, has become mandatory. A common phenomenon with practices which are made mandatory is that they are reduced to mere formalities without realising the reason for which they are designed. This is what has happened with colleges’ websites.

These websites which are supposed to be informative tools, are merely there as a part of an official procedure. The number of such institutions which have interactive websites and are regularly updated, are only a handful. Even those handful of institutions are among the top tier institutions. But everyone doesn’t land into a top tier institution. So how would these others come to know about an institution, when even their websites are not updated?

The College Corner section of Collegespeaks.com is not just another website for colleges, rather it is also an advertising platform. With easy navigation, standardised pages and no limitation to the volume of content, updating information could never have been easier for colleges. Apart from the basic information about an institution, there are sections for colleges to highlight events, attach handy forms and have their photo gallery.

The key advantage is being easily traced by students, if the campus offers courses suiting the students’ interests. This is through the search feature which enables students to find out the colleges which offer courses of their interest. The students would come to know that extra bit of information, at a glance,  if the college has registered with the site.

During the process of updating our database, we have come across sites which existed a couple of days back and then it expired because the domain expired. Another problem normally faced during college search is, the college’s website, though it may exist, isn’t traceable. This is because there are many institutions with similar names and hence they have complex domain names which can’t be retained except for students who are a part of the campus.

I would put it this way - this is a combo pack that offers not just space but gives an edge to the college’s profile by serving the accomplishments on a platter most liked by students. With a free three months trial, I would say it’s a deal worth giving a try.
